Gene Therapy: From Science Fiction to Medical Reality

Gene therapy is medical breakthrough that modifies a person’s genes to treat disease. It offers the hope of long remission or even cure for previously untreatable diseases. However, all of this innovation comes with a steep price tag of up to several million dollars for a one-time treatment.  The insurance industry as a whole is still struggling to balance the potential gains in quality & quantity of life with the ultra-high costs that could make these treatments unaffordable for many. This presentation will explore the basics of gene therapy, currently approved products and the near term FDA pipeline, and discuss the opportunities and threats that gene therapy poses to the insurance industry today.
